Phil has studied amphibian breeding behaviour for 25 years and started to be concerned about amphibian declines after attending the First World Congress of herpetology in 1989. He initiated the Southern African Frog Atlas Project which documented the status of over 100 species of frogs (published in 2004) and has been working on Leiopelmatid frogs in New Zealand for the last 10 years. Phil has conducted various translocations and with his colleagues, discovered a way to cure three frog species of chytridiomycosis in the lab. He has just co-written the Frog Recovery Plan for New Zealand and hopes to prevent any further declines happening there.

One of the world‘s most primitive frog species, Archey‘s frog is a “living fossil”.
