Conservation Proposals
- Urgently need to combat climate change by reducing the emissions of green house gases significantly and actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere to enable the long-term sustainability of coral reefs.
- Maximise coral reef resilience in the face of climate change by minimising direct human pressures on reefs. Capacity building and funding is needed in developing countries to implement coastal and marine management programmes and develop alternative livelihoods for small-scale fishers.
- Improve the management of existing MPAs, including enforcement, as part of integrated coastal zone and watershed management programmes.
- Create networks of MPAs to improve coral reef resilience. Remote island reefs also need to be fully protected to act as potential larval sources and reference points.
- Expand ecological and socioeconomic monitoring to ensure that sufficient information is provided to natural resource managers and inform decision makers.
