    Still here folks? These idents don’t count any more…

    OMG and LOL @louiskennedy.!

    (I’ve been toying the idea of deleting this old app @markpud. You know what they say,”old habits, break hard. “)

    I have noticed way fewer comments on here lately. Oh well…time to embrace the future. Take care everyone!!

    That’s all very well but I can’t get signed in to the new app :(

    @kthi,

    Sorry to hear that you have an issue with the new app, It’s currently in beta, so I’ll share your message with the ZSL team and ask them to get in touch to look at it.

    All the best,

    EDGE Admin

    @EDGE Admin, I have tried to embrace the new app, but many of my idents don’t seem to register, so I have dropped from 10 to 12 on the leaderboard, which seems to be the only way I can track what’s happening.
    I also find the images are less clear on the new app. I can see the same images on both apps, and find it much easier to see distant and well camouflaged animals in the old app. I think the black background may be the reason?
    Also, I find that I can do about 6 indents and then I am not shown any more unless I come out of the app and start again.
    And comparing the process of making the same ident on each app, it’s far faster on the old one! In addition, it’s really hard to see easily which images have been done. I think I must have tackled some of them several times over!
    All in all I find the new app extremely frustrating to use.

    @Chloe, please make it a priority to implement a collated chat feed in the new app. There has been a real community in here, and I’m sure it has kept many people active who might otherwise have got bored with it.

    I agree with @louiskennedy

    @EDGE Admin. I have now managed to access the new app thanks. One or two comments though. The white surround is very dazzling when the pic is dark especially with the need to brighten the screen. Also any error/typo/predictive text changed that need to be made cannot be rectified as you can’t go back nor delete

    @sophietoo
    I think you will find you have dropped places as many users have gone into the now available history and added one to two thousand idents in the last couple of days

    @EDGE Admin. Another thing – sorry reporting as I go along and find these things – the photo image if some of the animals is not as ‘descriptive’ as in the old app. The common eland is a prime example of not showing it’s markings

  13. sophietoo said,

    on October 8th, 2017 at 8:15 pm

    @mrmike, where is the history available?
    The thing that puzzles me is that I have far more indents on this app than are showing in the new one.

    @sophietoo the profile option shows the leaderboard in the new version. I can only guess that you’ve been id’ing in this version and those don’t get updated to the new one since the switch over

  15. sophietoo said,

    @EDGE Admin. I agree with @kthi’s comment below. The markings on the Eland image do not show up, especially the fact that they can have stripes like Kudu, which has led to many incorrect id’s over the years.
    And I am glad someone else has highlighted the white background issue.
    Another thing: in the old app it’s so easy to instantly see which images have been identified. It’s really obscure with the new app. I am afraid the hippo at the bottom is a really poor solution.
    I am really missing the simplicity of the old app…

  16. sophietoo said,

    @markpud. Yes I have been id’ing in this version, but only so I can see what I may have missed in the other version! I have no way of knowing otherwise. Unfortunately I was travelling all last week, so I have found it hard to find what I may have missed on the new version. Thus the old version is my only point of reference!

    @sophietoo, I have gone from 3 to 6, when I first looked at table I was 3rd and 500 ish ahead of 4th. Which is how I know 2 , 4 and 5 have added between 1 and 3 k idents.

    One suggestion for figuring out where you are up to in the new app, if you select any image from (for example) Lewa and id it, the app then takes you to the next newest Lewa image you’ve not done. So you can work thru Lewa then do the same with Winchester then lolldaiga etc. I hope a more visual way of telling which ones haven’t been id’ed can be implemented though :)

  19. mrmike said,

    Agreed, but it also allows you to id lots you have done in the past

  20. sophietoo said,

    Yes, I found myself somehow id’ing the hyena family from June/July all over again! Only realised when I looked at the date, which was actually quite hard to see.

    Hi @sophietoo – any idents you do in the old app will not appear in the new one, so if stats are important to you you need to switch over! Thanks for all your feedback, this is the beta version so it’s all being fed back to the developer so we can improve. In the new version you won’t be shown the same image twice, it will always show you the next image in the feed that needs idents (I think we’ve just had a run of similar looking images)

    Hi Louise, I did post an update but I think it got buried – there is a collated chat feed, if you go into an image to comment you can switch to a ‘community’ view. I think it’s not quite working right atm but we’re looking into fixing it. When the full version is released (remember this is an early beta/test version) there will also be an icon on each image showing the number of comments an image has so you can easily see which image people are commenting on

    Hi @kthi – do you mean the stock image used in the field guide? I can get this updated

  24. Chloe Aust said,

    on October 9th, 2017 at 12:51 pm

    Hi @mrmike – what do you mean about the history? It isn’t possible for users to change their stats (apart from doing more identifications)

  25. mrmike said,

    on October 9th, 2017 at 3:05 pm

    Since the new app has been available, some users near the top of the table have done 2-3 thousand idents, ie going back into history. New idents in the time have been circa 100. As @sophie too mentioned she realised she was id’ing the Hyena den from month’s ago.I have dropped from 3rd to 7th. Appreciate its not a competition but!

  26. sophietoo said,

    on October 10th, 2017 at 9:39 am

    @Chloe, thanks for your response, but I was referring to using the new app! I id’d loads of hyena images back in June, but they keep appearing in the new app as not id’d – i.e. No hippo appears! The only reason for looking at the old app is to see which images are new each day, because there is no clear way of telling in the new app.
    Maybe not all of my indents were transferred over and that’s why I get the old hyena pictures every day!!! Please check. This is not about competition, it’s about pointing out to you that something is not working properly.

    @markpud, thanks for your suggestion. That’s exactly what I have been doing, but when doing Loll Hills I always end up with the hyenas I id’d back in June on the old app !

  28. Chloe Aust said,

    on October 10th, 2017 at 4:11 pm

    @sophietoo – ah I see what you mean. No the hippo won’t appear in the new app for those as the new system is totally different from the old one so it doesn’t know that you’ve identified that image already as it wasn’t done in its system. We had to import the old images across in order to bring people’s favourites across

  29. Chloe Aust said,

    on October 10th, 2017 at 5:08 pm

    Hi @mrmike – the new system doesn’t know which images you’ve previously identified in the old system, it just knows how many idents you had done when we switched, so yes people can go back and identify images that they had already done in the old system if they want to. However all identifications are welcome as even if you re-identify an image that you identified before that is still helping us build up an accurate picture of what is in the image and as more people identify images they will surface less: the new system is very clever as once an image has had a certain amount of people saying it is the same thing it will accept that as a result and prioritise showing images that haven’t hit the threshold.

    We had to bring these old images across in order to bring your favourites across and also we are hoping to see a significant amount of new users when the new version launches next month and want them to be able to go back and see all the cool images that have come in over time (and have the opportunity to be able to undertake as many idents as the rest of you, although admittedly it will be a challenge to catch up!).
