Update in Development

Hi everyone,

Some of you may have noticed that the app is now warning you that when the next version of iOS comes out the current version will stop working, with the below notification appearing.

We’ve been working hard on Instant Wild 2.0 (thank you to those of you who have agreed to be part of the feedback process, your input has been really helpful). The new version will be faster, more user friendly (goodbye loads of sideways scrolling to identify rarer species!), with fresh features and exciting new projects to help. It will also be available on Android as well as iPhone and have a shiny desktop version as well.

We’re working with citizen science experts and top developers to make it an amazing experience and we’re really excited about sharing it with you. However developing these things takes time – especially as we’re working with really exciting, innovative tech to bring you projects based in remote parts of the world – and so the new version is not due for completion until the Autumn.

It’s anticipated that iOS 11 will be released in September so we’re working hard to try and get a version of Instant Wild 2.0 out before then.  It may be that we release an early iPhone version without all of the new features, so that iOS 11 doesn’t leave anyone without their Instant Wild fix. This will not only mean you don’t have a broken app on your phone but will also allow you as an existing user to be part of the feedback process – letting us know what you think as we continue to develop and add on the rest of the features!

So don’t worry, we’ve got our heads down working on Instant Wild 2.0. Thanks, as ever, for your continued support.

Chloe

@Chloe thanks for the reply I was obviously not clear. I use an old device which will not accept the newer app updates. Will the old app simply stop working at some stage in the near future. I am just preparing myself for the possibility that after six years and 40,000 idents that this will no longer be a part of my aost daily routine.

    Calvin.

@Luke – hi Luke, hope you had a wonderful time at Zoo Nights. The Android version is due for release in October – it is part of the Instant Wild 2.0 development that is happening at the moment. If you sign up to the ZSL newsletter it will be announced there – http://www.zsl.org/get-the-zsl-email-newsletter – or you can follow Instant Wild on twitter @InstantWild

Alternatively, keep checking back here – you can help with the identifications here and when the new version launches we’ll have all the details here. Chloe

@Calvin – Hi Calvin, I see what you mean.

If you don’t install the app update then my understanding is that you will still have the current version. However if/when you update your operating system to iOS 11 it is likely that it will stop that version of Instant Wild working. If you can’t install either the app or the iOS update I’m not sure how long it will keep working

However, the new website version of Instant Wild will be much better – it will work in the same way as the app with all the same features, unlike the current web version. As well as on laptop and tablet you should be able to use it as a website in Safari on your mobile, so you’ll still be able to keep using it on your phone in some way if the app stops being an option. Hope that helps, Chloe
