Founded in 1826, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and educational charity dedicated to promoting and achieving the conservation of animals and their habitats.
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is a registered charity (number 208728). Founded in 1826, ZSL rapidly became the world’s leading Learned Society in zoology, counting Charles Darwin amongst its early Fellows. Through our ground-breaking science, our active conservation projects in more than 50 countries and our two Zoos in the UK, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, we are striving to protect species all over the world. By actively working for wildlife ourselves, we hope to motivate others to take conservation action in their daily lives.
The EDGE of Existence programme was launched by the Zoological Society of London in 2007. Find out more about our programme in What is EDGE.
